Tracking  health and weight loss progress in perimenopause

Today I want to talk about something that let’s face it a lot us ladies will find ourselves experiencing above 40 years old. Ok,
maybe sometimes younger or a bit older but approximately around this age… and that are the challenges of perimenopause and the pesky hormones too.
If you’ve ever felt like one day you’re crushing your workouts and the next you can barely muster the energy to get out of bed, you’re not alone. It’s a rollercoaster ride, in the perimenopause. And this is something I’ve had first hand experience with. And love helping my clients navigate more easily too.
And regarding the scales, have you found that they might not budge despite your best efforts? I know it can feel frustrating and discouraging. But the truth is – it’s not you; it’s hugely down to hormones.
During perimenopause, our bodies undergo significant hormonal fluctuations. This is a natural part of life, and while it can feel overwhelming, it’s essential to be kind to yourself during this journey. Hormones like oestrogen and progesterone decline, affecting everything from our energy levels to our mood—and even our metabolism. It’s no wonder we often see changes in how our bodies respond to food and exercise.
Client win🩷
I want to share a story about one of my amazing clients who’s been working with me for fat loss, fitness and improving her perimenopausal symptoms that she’s been struggling with. Over the past 12 weeks, she has worked incredibly hard and the changes in her have been incredible. The scales shows a decrease of approx 7lbs, which I know she was initially slightly disappointed in at first but let’s face it we are all way to governed by those numbers on the scales. AND actually this weight loss is brilliant as it’s just over 1/2 a pound of fat loss per week.
Her progress in other areas has also  been nothing short of remarkable. Her energy levels have surged, which is brilliant as they were very low before and she used to only manage to fit in or do around 3k steps a day. She now ensures she hits her 8-10k steps a day because she has the energy and motivation to do this. This extra energy has allowed  her to power through workouts with newfound vigor. She’s doubled the weights she can lift, and her strength has improved significantly. She’s sleeping far better and is far happier with her evening routine which ensures it supports her sleep too. Yay.
Plus, she’s noticed that her clothes fit better, her face is leaner, and for sure her measurements have improved and fitness too.
But i think the most inspiring shift has been in her mindset. Rather than fixating solely on weight loss, which I know so many of us can do, she has embraced a broader perspective focused on feeling healthier, stronger, and happier.. This shift has empowered her to take control of her health and well-being once again and she’s feeling like she can cope with the perimenopause better which she wasn’t feeling before.
She’s motivated and inspired to continue working on her healthier lifestyle, prioritising sustainable habits over quick fixes. This new mindset has certainly transformed her journey from one of frustration to one of empowerment, making her feel more in charge of her own body and life.
So, how can you track your progress effectively? Here are several ways to measure your journey beyond the scale:

Progress Photos: Visual reminders of your hard work and transformation.
Measurements: Keep track of your waist, hips, and other areas to see physical changes.
Strength Gains: Celebrate the weights you can lift and the endurance you’ve built.
How Clothes Fit: Notice how your favourite jeans feel; that’s a significant indicator.
Energy Levels:  Take note of how much more energised you feel throughout the day.
Sleep Quality: Better rest is a huge win for overall health and well-being.
Remember, progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency and celebrating all the improvements you’re making. Be kind with yourself, and know that this journey is unique for all of us.
